Need for Optometry

There are currently 146 optometry schools and colleges in our country and the count of graduating optometrist is approximately 2,115. The demand is 10,000 Optometrist each year, and hence there is a short-fall of 6500 optometrist per academic year. For a country with 1.3 billion populations, there is a huge shortage of Ophthalmologist & Optometrist. Currently the ratio is 1 Eye care professional to 1,25,000 people. The aim therefore should be at least 1 Ophthalmologist & Optometrist for 10,000 people.

Optometry is a healthcare profession dealing with eye and vision care. Optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners whose responsibilities include refraction and dispensing, assisting in detection and management of eye conditions, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system.

BSc Optometry Course Details

Eligibility :

Applications should have passed their higher secondery examination (+2) with science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths / Computer Science or Physics, Chemistry, Botony and Zoology).

Leteral Entry to II year B.Optom is allowed is allowed by the University. Candidates who have passed a 2 years Diploma course in Optometry from a recognized University can apply for lateral entry. Work experience is not necesary. These students will have to study II, III and IV year of B-Optom.

Duration :

This is a 4 years Bachelor degree course. First 3 years of theory and the 4th years is a compulsory Interbship to be done at various branches of Appasamy Eye Hospital, Various Eye Hospital & Vision Centers.

Diploma Optometry Course Details

Eligibility :

Duration :

2 1/2 years (30 Months), 2years of theory classes and 6 months od internship to be done at various branches of Appasamy Eye Hospital, Various Eye Hospital & Vision Centers.

Scope :

Work in eye hospital as an Ophthalmologist assistant.
Work in eye operation theaters.
Work in eye clinics, hospital in foreign countries as an ophthalmologist assistant.
